Will human race become extinct because of Artificial Intelligence?

|

Artificial Intelligence has been doubted as “beneficiary” since humans realized it can someday turn into a real and serious threat to human race. Can smart machines, objects, humans turned into God-like cyborg transform into dangerous threat towards humans worldwide? Is it even thinkable that human race can come to an end because we ourselves were able to create machines smarter and much more powerful than us that can one day make us become extinct?

“It's our responsibility to think about all of the consequences good and bad. We've had the same debate about atomic power and nanotechnology. With any powerful technology there's always the dialogue about how do you use it deliver the most benefit and how it can be used to deliver the most harm,” Professor Hawking has recently said for BBC

As Professor Hawking said, the debate about how to use such powerful technologies we were able to develop so far in our favor, be it for good or bad purposes still continues. Since the very beginning, Artificial Intelligence was given birth having in mind how many great things can be achieved with it, how many more it could develop our world and the way we live in the near future.

“If you look at the history of AI, it has been characterized by over-optimism. The founding fathers, including Alan Turing, were overly optimistic about what we'd be able to achieve. We dramatically underestimate the complexity of the natural world and the human mind. Take any speculation that full AI is imminent with a big pinch of salt,” Hawking said in an interview for BBC.

While it is still too early to be concerned if AI will turn into our worst enemy, we seem to have incorporated artificial body parts into humans. Various researchers actually believe that we have already started the long way towards the futuristic ‘God-like cyborgs’ since several parts of our bodies have been replaced with artificial body parts such as artificial bones and brains and artificial internal organs like artificial kidneys, bionic eyes, artificial hearts, and so on.

“I think it is likely in the next 200 years or so Homo sapiens will upgrade themselves into some idea of a divine being, either through biological manipulation or genetic engineering of by the creation of cyborgs, part organic part non-organic. [...] It will be the greatest evolution in biology since the appearance of life. Nothing really has changed in four billion years biologically speaking. But we will be as different from today's humans as chimps are now from us,” said Professor Yuval Noah Harari from the Hebrew University of Jerusalem during his presentation at the Hay Festival of Literature & Arts in Wales.
