Google and Apple to ‘fight’ for Indian developers

As India is expected to overtake the United States and have the largest number of developers in 2017, tech giants are already “fighting” to attract and train as many Indian developers as possible. With the half of 2016 already behind, it is understandable why tech giants like Google and Apple are ‘rushing’ to win over the largest amount of developers and train them based on respective curricula.

According to ComputerWorld “there are about 18.2 million software developers worldwide, a number that is due to rise to 26.4 million by 2019, a 45% increase, says Evans Data Corp. in its latest Global Developer Population and Demographic Study. Today, the U.S. leads the world in software developers, with about 3.6 million. India has about 2.75 million. But by 2018, India will have 5.2 million developers, a nearly 90% increase, versus 4.5 million in the U.S., a 25% increase though that period, Evans Data projects.”

In the coming two years, the large number of Indian developers is expected to be integrated and trained by various tech companies. Apple announced in May 2016 that the company will begin to ‘dedicate’ energies towards the high number of developers in 2017, while Google is already starting to take initiatives in India within this year positioning itself a step ahead Apple.

“Google has partnered with Udacity to offer 'nanodegrees' for Android development at different levels – with a full course launched in 2015 and one for beginners last month. The courses with Udacity can be costly for those getting started, but the company will be making its Android Developer Fundamentals courseware available for free later this year,” according to developer-tech.com.

At least 2 million professional developers in India are expected to get trained by google which has already launched its  'Android Skilling' initiative that hopefully for Google will attract the highest number of professional developers compared to other tech giants that plan to do the same shortly after.

“We believe India is uniquely placed to innovate and shape the internet experience of billions of users who are and will come online on the mobile platform,”Caesar Sengupta, vice president of product management at Google

said in the statement, while Peter Lubbers, head of developer training at Google said in New Delhi that they “are hoping to get in about 2,000 different universities, training about 4,000 faculty to reach in excess of 250,000 students in these universities every year.”

The curriculum Google plans to integrate within Indian university curricula is expected to not only train new professional developers to work for Google, but also become better trained and increase their job-landing chances after they graduate.
