Fuchsia - Google’s New Operating System?

|

A project posted on GitHub under the name Fuchsia with the description “Pink + Purple == Fuchsia (a new Operating System)” has raised many speculations about the purpose and the future of this new operating system. According to Google spokesperson Joshua Cruz, Fuchsia “is a new open source project that is not at all related to Android or Chrome OS.” Cruz said for LinuxInsider that there are “many revolving open source projects at Google,” but preferred to not disclose a more detailed information about Fuchsia new project.

So far it seems there are eight people from Google’s team: James Robinson, George Kulakowski, Christopher Anderson, Petr Hosek, Christopher Lane, Brian Swetland, Tim Kilbourn, and Travis Geiselbrecht, that are working on this new open source operating system. According to Tech News World, “Fuchsia already has undergone some testing, and it is booting "reasonably well" on NUCs based on Intel's Skylake and Broadwell processors, according to a discussion thread on Y Combinator's Hacker News. It also is booting on the Acer Switch Alpha 12, and soon will support the Raspberry Pi 3. Work on drivers is in progress.”

Two people from Fuchsia’s team Travis Geiselbrecht and Brian Swetland, as reported by Tech News World, have previously worked on NewOS, iOS, WebOS, Jawbone, BeOS, and have been involved with Android as well. Since not a lot of information has been posted about the project and Google has yet to comment on its new operating system project, many speculations such as the one that Fuchsia is built on Magenta Kernel (based on LittleKernel, another project by Google) have been rising.

“The Magenta kernel can do a lot more than just power a router. Google's own documentation says the software "targets modern phones and modern personal computers" that use "fast processors" and "non-trivial amounts of RAM." It notes that Magenta supports a number of advanced features, including user modes and a "capability-based security model." Further evidence that Fuchsia is intended for more than just Wi-Fi-connected gadgets include the fact that Google already has its own IoT platform (the Android-based Brillo), and the fact that the new OS includes support for graphics rendering,” according to an article published by The Verge.

The tech giant held its annual I/O developers conference I/O 2016 from May 18 to May 20 bringing together developers from all over the world. Various new products and Google plans regarding AI and machine learning were shared during a 2-hour-keynote by Pichai. The company is already applying artificial intelligence and machine learning in various areas, and making investments in AI and ML a priority.

Furthermore, at least 2 million professional developers in India are expected to get trained by Google which has already launched its  'Android Skilling' initiative that hopefully for the tech giant, will attract the highest number of professional developers compared to other big companies that plan to do the same shortly after.
